How to fix your credit score yourself

| August 12, 2011

Bad credit can interfere with many aspects of a person’s life. Most insurance and loan companies, as well as many employers nowadays, check an applicant’s credit. If you are one of the many people with bad credit in today’s economy, utilize the following steps to repair your own credit score. No, it will not be easy (or quick), but in time you can have good credit and achieve the things you truly want in life.

The first step is to get a copy of your credit report. Once you have your credit report, check over it for errors, and contact the creditors associated with the errors (if any). Write a letter to each creditor explaining why you think the questionable items should not be on your credit report.

Second step, pay off all delinquent accounts and pay on other accounts, even if they are not past due. Bringing all of your accounts up-to-date will help your credit score enormously. Paying on items, such as credit cards, that are not overdue can be beneficial to your credit score as well. When companies look at a customer’s credit report and see other accounts close to their borrowing limit, they will think twice before offering more credit to the customer.

Third, think before applying for new lines of credit. Multiple credit inquiries do not look good on a person’s credit report. Finally, be patient and pay all bills on time. Credit repair does not occur overnight, but will happen given time.
